War is Hell. Anyone who has ever put on a uniform and purposefully went to where the enemy was intent on killing him can attest to that. But instead of a singular definition of Hell that religion preaches, war is so much more. It is Hell on the families left behind. Hell on the mind and spirit. Hell on the nerves. Hell on coming home and trying to remember where you fit in. Yes, war is Hell. A Long Way From Home is the compilation of my experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan from 2002-2006. It gives first hand accounts of some of the most gruesome fighting and a behind the scenes look at what really went on from various levels.

I am also a military history buff. In my 70 years of reading accounts of war experience I found this one written from the heart and truthfully. Mr Freed was not afraid to share his personal life with his readers. I have been donating my collection of military history books to the Eldred Pennsylvania World War ii Museum. If I take books they already have they donate them to their newly opened library. I am planning to donate this book to their library. More young people need to have an opportunity to read this book. A Long Way From Home SFC R Christian Warren Freed 9781631030086 Books Reviews

Very gripping, lots of personal reflection about right and wrong, should or should not. No one is unscathed in war.
What is intriguing about this book is that it reflects the daily thoughts of those with boots on the ground. Not every mission is newsworthy, not every day is full of heroics, but every Soldier at every level will recognize the sense of mission, the urgency, the pride, the tedium of service described here. SFC (R) Freed details why he joined up, the conflicting emotions he felt as he faced each deployment (from Korea to Iraq and Afghanistan), the consequences it had on his personal life, and how he used that time to become the person and the writer he is now. Every Soldier can find something to identify with, whether it is the tedium of never-ending drills, the excitement of seeing new places, the nervousness of homecoming, or the combined joy and sadness at retiring from service. This is a good, honest look at a Soldier's life.
As someone not in the military, it really opened my eyes to what military deployment can be like. I have several military folks in my extended family, including a career officer who just retired - but I really had no idea what it's like to be in the military, to be deployed, and how much that mission means. And why a soldier looks forward to deployment, even when leaving family behind. Christian does a wonderful job of painting the picture, making the emotions real - and sharing a lot of his own personal experience as a soldier with a family.
Great book! Gives a soldier's point of view.
This was a great read, I really enjoyed reading this book. Thank you for your service.
A great read written by someone who has "been there and done that" in both theaters of war. No fluff here...just honest retelling of what it was like over there written by a brave soldier. I recommend this for anyone who wants to get a feel of what the life of a soldier in the modern day ARMY at war is like.
Strikingly honest and compelling look into modern battlefield deployment. If you are looking for a fluffed up version of wartime life, you won't find it here. Just the raw reality of war and service through the eyes of a soldier who experienced it. A reality that is indeed not Hollywood. 100% worth the read.
