Like most guitarists, I have a large number of books, and get several guitar magazines that provide lots of great information. Scales, chords, licks, the books and mags have tons of it, and it's good stuff. Additionally, I take lessons.What Brian is teaching in this book is something that rarely gets discussed in books, magazines, or by music teachers. How YOU as the player learn to improvise in a way that's melodic. If you are player that wants to express yourself on your instrument, rather than simply mimic the playing of others, then this book is for you.
It is very straight forward and from the very first page you are actively engaged in getting better at making music that comes from you. Don't let the word "Jazz" in the title scare you. This book is not about learning a complex music form. It is about you having fun while developing your ability to improvise.

This is a "first things first" book/cd.
If you're trying to learn to improvise from scratch,or trying to find ways of improving your playing,
I'd say,start with Brian Kane's book.
This basic foundation is so essential, (its all about the PHRASING!)and without it you can waste years tinkering around with all kinds of
scales,theory,licks and tricks etc. that won't really help you to get any better,
So, buy this book first,read it and follow through,-do everything it says.
You won't be overwhelmed with 50,000 things to absorb before you can play a note,
You'll be able to apply what you're learning right away,and feel the benefits.
Its going to affect your comprehension of the music you listen to.
The presentation is very clear and concise,giving you what you NEED to know about melody.
This book first!
Kane's book is a breakthrough in getting new players started in improvisation, but also does the unique trick of being able to teach seasoned/older players the craft of intentionally creating truly melodic solos that have development. The approach asks the player to plan what will take place in a solo with respect to melodic ideas and where they will be used, and many ideas and approaches are offered in practicing how to do this. If I had a kid, I would want them to learn jazz from this book. I have studied it myself and found it to be helpful in clarifying a workable approach to melodic and motivic improvisation. It has given me many new ideas for soloing, based on the idea of playing phrases, rather than thinking about jazz in terms of using particular scale sounds over this or that chord. great book...truly remarkable in its ability to have application to all levels. A great jazz pedagogy approach too.
