Growing up in China! People often ask if I liked growing up in China. Did it feel different? Different from what? How could it feel different if the sights and sounds, and, yes, even the pungent smells had always been there in my life from the time I was born? Now, looking back on it, I suppose I can see where it was different compared to growing up in America, and perhaps can understand why people might ask. But it wasn’t different back then. No, it wasn’t then at all. Even when we were caught up in the swirl of things happening in China on a national scale, the Communist uprising, the attacks by Japan that presaged World War II, things that actually affected my life more directly in one way or another, I was only a child busy with growing up in my own little world, taking my own personal small footsteps in the Land of the Dragon.

Small Footsteps In The Land Of The Dragon Barbara Brooks Wallace 9780989406543 Books Reviews

Barbara Brooks Wallace lived in China before the revolution the changed it from its ancient emperor-led country into a Communist form of government. Read her fascinating story of the everyday life of an American family.
Loved this book! A really wonderful story and I would highly recommend this to anyone!
This may be the only autobiographical book of its kind to be found anywhere, written by an adult, born of American parents and grew up ina faraway country, in this case pre-Communist China. This book really should be on the "must read" list of anyone and everyone who wants to know something about this exotic faraway country of once-upon-a-time-China.
I first noticed this book because the cover featuring a dragon. Because I love all things "dragon", I bought it. Of course it turned out not to be about dragons but I was entranced by the true life story of its author growing up in China! Charming and so well written, I highly recommend this book - you won't be able to put it down as you follow the author's exciting life through the eyes of a young girl in China's intriguing foreign land!
There's a lot of fascination with China these days. New markets are opening there, the economy is improving, but most folks still know China as the land of Mao, communism and dictatorship. Here is a view from a very low altitude (the height of a child) of the world before Mao. Barbara Brooks Wallace was raised in China and her experiences show the everyday influences on life from the traditions and attitudes that pre-date China's adventures into communism, many of which live on today. The culture and the politics are two separate things, and this book shows the heart of the people at close range.
What an absolutely charming account of the author’s formative years spent in eastern China! The author’s eloquent recollection of growing up in the land of the dragon during the post-Great Revolution/pre-World War II era takes the reader on a multisensory journey through life’s common, and not-so-common, childhood lessons. Her chronological progression from the toddler years through mid-adolescence, as she experiences the intricacies of interpersonal relationships, conquers challenging obstacles, and vanquishes fears within the borders of the country she first called ‘home’, is humbling, authentic and refreshingly honest. Peppered throughout this artfully told tale is an account of newsworthy events which the reader comes to understand both through the author’s memories of her thoughts as a child and through her prized introspective reflections on those thoughts as an adult. In conjunction with her ever-growing awareness of the happenings in the world around her as she ages and gleans her pearls of wisdom, we are treated to esoteric glimpses of gender-based behaviors and societal norms held in esteem during this era by the Americans, the British, and the Chinese alike. Simultaneously, we are eased into the author’s ever-growing awareness of the ripening economic conditions which allowed communism to flourish and spread like wildfire in this part of the world. It is within this contextual environment of in-fighting, civil unrest, marauding bandits and later, invading Japanese armies that the author begins to sense that she is witnessing history in the making, and indeed she has quite the story to tell. Fortunately, that story was not too far beyond her youthful mind to grasp. The author does not hide her naivety and child-like innocence in this enchanting narrative, a major reason I found the account so charming and appealing. The bottom line is that it’s hard not to like, or relate to, Little Bobbie. The tale of her reluctant adventures is so colorful and vivid that I felt as if I were right there, sharing in those experiences with her. Cringing one moment, and full of joy and triumph the next, I found myself unable to put this book down. It’s definitely a pleasure to read the prose of Barbara Brooks Wallace.
Everyone seems to find this memoir pretty unusual and loves it. I am, needless to say, very pleased about this.
